Note

Called The Great. Louis fought three wars with Venice (1342-46, 1357-58,
and 1378-81) for the control of the eastern Adriatic coast and was finally
successful. Bulgaria, Moldavia, Wallachia, and Serbia also acknowledged
his suzerainty, and when he succeeded his uncle, Casimir III, as king of
Poland, he became the most powerful ruler in eastern Europe. Louis
instituted many reforms in Hungary, which prospered during his reign. His
rule of Poland, where he made many concessions to the nobility, was less
beneficial.
