Note

Grandson of Sigismund I of Poland, for whom he was also named (John
Sigismund). He was elected king shortly after his father's Death, while
still in his infancy, but his claim was contested by Ferdinand I of
Germany (later Holy Roman emperor). On the pretext of protecting John's
interests, as he had his father's, the Ottoman sultan Suleiman I, the
Magnificent, then invaded Hungary (1541) and occupied Buda. Ferdinand
finally made peace with Suleiman in 1562, receiving a small part of
Hungary. John's rule was largely confined to Transylvania.
