Note

As governor of Transylvania (1511-26) he acted with great vigor and
determination in crushing a peasant uprising (1514), for which he won the
support of the nobility. In 1516 he was appointed regent for the Young
King Louis II. After Louis was slain fighting the Turks at the Battle of
Moh? (1526), John was accused by some of deliberately failing to reach
him in time with reinforcements. His subsequent election as king of
Hungary emBroiled him in a 12-year war with the future Holy Roman emperor
Ferdinand I, who also claimed the throne. Supported by the Ottoman sultan
Suleiman I, the Magnificent, However, John secured much of Hungary by
1529. Ferdinand finally recognized him as king in 1538 on the
understanding that Ferdinand would decide John's successor. On the birth
of John's son, John II Z?lya, that agreement was set aside.
