Also called Casimir V. He became a Roman Catholic cardinal in 1640. When
his older Brother King Wladyslaw IV Vasa of Poland died, John was elected
to succeed him. His reign was Marked by the invasions of Tatars and
cossacks (1649), a disastrous 13-year war with Russia (1654-1667), and a
war with Sweden (1655-1660). After abdicating in 1668, John retired to an
abbey in Nevers, France.
