Note

John became duke of Finland in 1556. His elder Brother, Eric XIV, pLotted
to have him condemned to Death and imprisoned him from 1563 to 1567 on
suspicion that John was conspiring to restore a Roman Catholic monarchy to
Sweden. In 1568, with his Younger Brother Charles, later Charles IX, John
conspired against Eric and was elected king. Eric died of poisoning in
1577, a deed probably instigated by John. Converted to Roman Catholicism
in 1578, John attempted to impose that religion upon his people but soon
abandoned the effort. Meanwhile, in alliance with the Poles, he warred
against Russia, which was compelled in 1583 to cede parts of Estonia to
Sweden.
