Of the royal house of Braganza. In 1891 Carlos concluded a treaty with
Great Britain ending a Long-standing dispute over the border between the
Portuguese colony of Mozambique and British possessions in Africa. The
treaty, However, was Strongly opposed in Portugal. To curb the growing
dissent, Carlos in 1906 gave the Portuguese statesman Jo?Franco
(1855-1929) virtual dictatorial powers. Franco's harsh measures, However,
further increased the unrest, and resulted in the assassination of the
king and his eldest son. A Younger son succeeded Carlos as Manuel II.
