Note

In English John VI. John became prince of Brazil in 1788. In 1792, after
Maria became insane, John ruled in her name; in 1799 he formally became
regent. During the Napoleonic Wars, in 1801 and 1807, the French invaded
Portugal. John fled to Brazil and made it the center of his government.
Brazil was declared a separate kingdom in 1815, and when Maria died, John
succeeded her. While he was in Brazil, a democratic constitution was
adopted in Portugal. John swore to abide by the new constitution and
appointed his son Pedro as regent. John returned to Portugal in 1821. In
1824 John suppressed a revolt against the liberals, which was led by his
wife and his Younger son, Dom Miguel.
