Death

He was taken up to Heaven where he gained the knowledge of all secrets.

Note

Enoch appears briefly in the Old and New Testament. He is also represented in the Book of Enoch, which formed part of the Dead Sea Scrolls collection and presents itself as being written by Enoch himself.

Notably, as the great grandfather of Noah, Enoch is said through the Book of Enoch to have known of the coming of the great flood and hence Noah's knowledge of its coming. Enoch is noted as one of two humans (the other being Elijah) who, according to Christian tradition, were assumed into heaven.

Uniquely, in the Generations of Adam, the text Reads - that Enoch "walked with God: and he was not; for God took him," avoiding the mortal Death ascribed to Adam's other descendants. Additionally, Enoch is described as the father of Methuselahand the son of Jared.

Despite the brief descriptions of him, Enoch is one of the main two focal points for much of the 1st millennium BC Jewish mysticism, notably in the Book of Enoch.

In Islam, he is usually referred to as Idris, and regarded as a prophet.

Note

Due to the association of Enoch in Jewish legend (jHenosch) with learning and writing, the Ancient Greeks identified him as Hermes Trismegistus, a syncretic deity. Consequently, they also regarded him as the discoverer of the zodiac and ofastronomy in general. Enoch also appeared in tales describing heroes being permanently taken by the Gods, such as Ganymede. In historical criticism, these stories are seen as being the influence behind More elaborate traditions such as Enochtravelling to Heaven via a flying horse (compare pegasus).

Some scholars have linked Enoch with the Sumerian king En-men-dur-ana. The specific lifespan of Enoch, 365 years, corresponding to the duration of the solar year, is linked to En-men-dur-ana's association with the sun god Utu.

According to the Figurists (a group of Jesuit missionaries mainly leaded by Joachim Bouvet into China at the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century and based on ideas of Matteo Ricci 1552 to 1610), Fu Xi in China's ancient historyis actually Enoch.

In Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, the angel MeTatron is revealed to have been Enoch when he lived on Earth.

In Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle trilogy and the earlier Cryptonomicon, the character Enoch Root or Enoch the Red is alive through several centuries and may be suspected of being a supernatural being.

The author of the book "Chariots of the Gods?" ERich von Däniken, claims that an ancient pharaoh by the name of Saurith may have also been Enoch.

Note

Enoch went on to marry Edna, according to Jubilees, and the sole named grandChild of Jared is Enoch's son Methuselah, the Longest-living human mentioned in the Bible (Genesis 5:18, 5:21, 5:27).
