He was an American public official and historian and educated at Harvard
University. After serving as an officer in the Union army during the
American Civil War, he became railroad commissioner of Massachusetts, USA, and
from 1884 to 1890 he was president of the Union Pacific Railroad. From
1893 to 1895 he was chairman of the Massachusetts, USA Parks Commission. In
1895 he became president of the Massachusetts, USA Historical Society and, in
1901, president of the American Historical Association. His Works include
Railroads: Their Origin and Problems (1878), Richard Henry Dana: A
Biography (1891), Three Episodes of Massachusetts, USA History (1892), and Lee
at Appomattox (1902).
