John III (of Portugal), in Portuguese, Jo?III (1502-57), king of
Portugal (1521-57), the son of King Emanuel. At his accession Portugal was
at the height of its power, but during his reign its influence began to
wane. Colonial enterprise, However, continued; Portuguese title to Brazil
was confirmed by the Congress of Badajoz in 1524 and the country's Asian
possessions were expanded. John established the Inquisition in Portugal in
1531, under his Brother Henry, who later became king. John also allowed
the Jesuits to enter the country in 1540, and their influence in education
became dominant toWard the end of his reign.
