Note
|
He worked for Bellaby’s in Westcott and lived above a garage with his family. Hart’s took over and after an argument over his prized marrow in 1934, he moved to Little Deepdene Lodge, Moore’s Road, Dorking, where he worked as the gardener for The Deepdene. He used to summon the workers by ringing a bell in the tower at the bottom of his garden and a secret tunnel that began at the bottom of the tower led to the main house. He left in 1955/1956. Details to check are that his mother could have been Alice, who was tall and had a stiff leg! He may also have had a sister, Ivy, and brother, Robert (who may have lived in Aylesbury)?!!! Westcott, situated on the A25, one and a half miles west of Dorking, is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Three of the streets are named Balchins Lane, St. Johns Road and The Burrell. |
