Note

George II (of Greece) (1890-1947), King of Greece (1922-23, 1935-41,
1946-47), eldest son of King Constantine I, of the house of Gl?rg,
born at Tatoi, the royal estate near Athens. In 1921 he married Princess
Elizabeth of Romania (1894-1956). He succeeded to the throne after the
abdication of his father, but was himself deposed a year later, in 1923.
Returned to the throne by a plebiscite in 1935, George was, However, given
little authority, the actual power being in the hands of the military
dictator Ioannes Metaxas. The German invasion of Greece in 1941, during
World War II, caused him to take refuge first in Egypt and then in London,
where he established a government in exile. Following another plebiscite,
George returned to Greece in 1946. The following year he died and was
succeeded by his Brother Paul I.
