Note
|
Westcott, situated on the A25, one and a half miles west of Dorking, is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Three of the streets are named Balchins Lane, St. Johns Road and The Burrell. Stow Maries, on Balchin's Lane and sold to the actor Leslie Howard, is now owned by Ann Wickham. Ingrid Bergman, the actress, used to stay at The Crown. Leslie Howard Steiner, born in 1893 at Forest Hill, to a Hungarian Jewish immigrant piano-playing father, served in the cavalry during WW I. He became an actor and associated with A.A. Milne in making silent films, then Hollywood and roles such as Sir Percy Blakeney in “The Scarlet Pimpernel”, and Ashley Wilkes in “Gone With The Wind”. During WW II he became a Radio Broadcaster in England and directed patriotic films. He died in January 1943 when the civilian plane in which he was returning from a lecture tour in neutral Spain and Portugal was shot down over the Bay of Biscay. |
