To the honour and glory of god, and in loving memory of Walter Wyndham Burrell Bt., MP and of Walter Henry Wyndham Raymond Burrell his son, Dorothea Lady Burrell with her 4 daughters and youngest son dedicate this window 1890. The window, by C. E. Kempe, sits in 13th century stonework and is on the East side of the church. Dated around 1890, it shows Christ crucified with his mother, Mary, and St. John either side of him. The scenes below show St. John slaying a Dragon with a castle in the background, Adam and Eve being expelled from the Garden of Eden, and St. John the Evangelist writing the Book of Revelations on the Greek Island of Patmos. Patmos was known in ancient times as the island where many poppies grew and some historians believe the dreams and visions attributed to John were induced by opium consumption. |
