Note
|
He succeeded to the family estates in 1683 and lived at Ockenden until his death. Described as a kind-hearted, scholarly, English gentleman, with a whimsical wit and some very human traits, his diaries included hand drawn pictures of things he was writing about, a new wheelbarrow, a bell given to him by his niece, hats for his servants, and a sketch of Cuckfield church. A very generous character, he loved having people to dine with him, especially at Christmas. He included the humbler members of society and not just his own class. The following is the food provided at a dinner at Ockenden House on New Years Day 1706: plumm pottage, calve's head and bacon, goose, pig, boiled beef, a clod, two baked puddings, three dishes of minced pies, two capons, two dishes of tarts and two pullets. Greatly upset about his only child's choice of husband, Timothy changed his will on her death, leaving Ockenden to his brother Peter, on trust for his granddaughter, Elizabeth. Along with his cousin, Peter Courthope, Timothy was patron and friend of John Ray, the natural philosopher. The monuments are dedicated to Timothy (bottom) and his wife (top), were erected by his brothers, Walter and Peter, and are both in Latin. |
