Note
|
A keen cricketer, Peter played a couple of matches for Kent and played nine known first-class matches for White Conduit Fields (1785-1790), forerunner to the MCC. An influential member, he is best known for his part in the foundation of Marylebone Cricket Club in 1787. Created 1st Baron Gwydir through his wife's inheritance, Sir Peter acted as his wife and sister-in-law's deputy in the hereditary office of Lord Great Chamberlain of England. He was Deputy Grand Chamberlain in the trial of Warren Hastings , the first Governor-General of India (1773-1786). Hastings was impeached in 1787, tried for corruption and acquitted in 1795. Sir Peter bought Foxgrove Farm, Beckenham, Kent, from his uncle, Sir William Burrell, and exchanged it in 1793 for other lands with John Cator, Esq. |
