Note
|
After graduation he trained at Lincoln's Inn (one of the four Inns of Court at Temple Church, London, the others being Gray's Inn, Inner Temple and Middle Temple) and was called to the Bar in 1749. He never practised as a lawyer and jo ined his father's business at the London end. At the Lisbon end was another Peter Burrell, probably the grandson of Alexander Burrell (b.1645). He inherited the Kent and Sussex estates (except for one farm that went to his brother, William) on his father's death. He used to reside at Langley Park during the summer season. Written on the memorial: To the memory of Peter Burrell of Beckenham in Kent Esq., Surveyor General of crown lands who died 06/11/1775. He married Elizabeth, eldest daughter and coheir of John Lewis of Hackney in Middlesex, by whom he had 1 son and 5 daughters. Peter, b. 16/06/1764 married Priscilla Barbara Elizabeth Baroness Willoughby of Eresby, eldest daughter of Peregrine Bertie, Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven. 1d Elizabeth Amelia b. 28/01/1749 married Richard Bennett Esq. This tablet is erected as a small mark of affectionate respect by his surviving brother William Burrell. |
