Note
|
He let the manor house at Knepp in the late 1860’s, choosing instead to live at Ockenden Manor, where he added a new part to the house, including a stable block. King Edward VII, at the time Prince of Wales, signed the warrant agreeing to the formation of The Mighty Burrell Freemasons Lodge, #1829, on 28/05/1879. Consecrated at the Old Town Hall in Shoreham, it was later moved to the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. Written on the stained glass window at St. Mary's Church: We pray you remember in the Lord, Walter Wyndham Burrell Bt. born 26/10/1814 and died 24/01/1886 and was buried at Shipley in whose memory this window is dedicated. Written on the stained glass window at St. George's Church: To the honour and glory of god, and in loving memory of Walter Wyndham Burrell Bt., MP and of Walter Henry Wyndham Raymond Burrell his son, Dorothea Lady Burrell with her 4 daughters and youngest son dedicate this window 1890. The window, by C. E. Kempe, sits in 13th century stonework and is on the East side of the church. Dated around 1890, it shows Christ crucified with his mother, Mary, and St. John either side of him. The scenes below show St. John slaying a Dragon with a castle in the background, Adam and Eve being expelled from the Garden of Eden, and St. John the Evangelist writing the Book of Revelations on the Greek Island of Patmos. Patmos was known in ancient times as the island where many poppies grew and some historians believe the dreams and visions attributed to John were induced by opium consumption. |
