Note

3X GT GRANDFATHER:JOHN BUCHANAN 1801-1889
John was born February 11, 1801 in Limekilns, Dunfermline, Fife Scotland, to Thomas Buchanan(34 yrs. Old) and Betty Paterson (35 yrs. Old.) He was baptized February 16 of that year at the United Association Burgh Seceders in Limekilns. His father Thomas (1766-1833) was a day laborer in Bell Hills at the time of John’s birth and later worked at the Baldridge Beer company where he was working at the time of his death. John had four older siblings and two younger (according to census reports): Ann (b.1792), Mary (b.1794), Elizabeth (b.1796), Thomas (b. 1798), Janet (b.1805), and Henry (b.1809).

Limekilns served as the main port for the town of Dunfermline, a few miles to the north.
Early in the life of the village the importance of the local limestone became clear, both for farming improvements and for mortar for stone buildings. An industry quickly grew up using kilns fuelled by charcoal and later coal to convert lime to quicklime, which was then shipped out to the rest of eastern Scotland. (from Internet)

By 1830 John had worked his way in the farming hierarchy to the status of ploughman.

John married Catherine Meldrum (1810-1845) in Dunfermline. Their first child, Thomas, was born in 1831. The family was living in Brucefield, Dunfermline. By 1841 John had given up farm life to become a damask handloom weaver.
Other children came into the family: (born in Brucefield) Andrew (b.1833), Margaret (b.1835),John (b.1838), Elizabeth (b.1840). Pamela (b.1843) and Robert (b.1845) are indicated Garvock, Brucefield Feus as place of birth. Catherine died on December 10, 1845, most likely in or resulting from childbirth. By the March 1851 census, John, a widower for six years, is still primarily a weaver, living at Clais and BrucefieldFeus, with his children Margaret, John, Elizabeth, Pamela and Robert. In June on the 9th he married Janet Carmylie, herself a widow with several children. By 1855 John is reported as renting a house and garden from the school master, James Robertson of Newton Dalkeith for a fee of 7 (pounds?) The family certainly needed the space!

Sometime between 1851 and 1860, the eldest Buchanan boy, Thomas, emmigrated to Ontario. In Toronto he married Catherine Morrison. They appear to have lived on Adelaide St.East in a two story brick house at the time of the Canadian census in 1861.

John’s daughter Elizabeth married Alexander Spence in 1861 in the gardens of the Free Church of Scotland.

By 1865 John is renting (still from James Robertson the school master), a house with a loomshop, byre (cattle barn) and ground (grazing land) for 4 (pounds?) This is in Brucefield Feus. John is described as a laborer on the census. By 1871 daughter Elizabeth and her family have emmigrated to Ontario.

In 1875 John is still renting the same place in Brucefield Feus, but his landlord has died and a representative collects the rent. John is listed as a gardener. In 1877 Janet died in July after 26 years of marriage. John has once again become a widower at the age of 74.

In 1881 John still lives at Brucefield Feus with his granddaughter, Jane Watters, age 35. This is Margaret’s daughter who is acting as John’s housekeeper. On December 16, 1889 at the age of 88, John died of pulmonary congestion with “senile decay” according to the official record. His son Richard Watters was responsible for the death certificate.
