Ellen was born in Pennsylvania in 1848. When Ellen was almost a year old, her family boarded a river boat
up the Missouri river on their way to the Rocky Mountains. Her mother died of cholera on May 7, 1849. Her two
sisters Annie and Mary died on May 11, and were buried in the river several miles from their mother. An older couple
took Ellen and cared for her for awhile.
The family remained in Council Bluffs for over a year. Her father married Lydia Catherine Mason. Two years
later they were in Meadow Creek, Millard County, Utah. Then in 1854 they were in Cedar City.
Ellen sheared sheep, washed the wool, carded, and then spun it into yarn, to make stockings. Ellen became
an expert candle maker. She also herded sheep and cattle.
Ellen had a wonderful disposition and personality, so cheerful kind and dependable.
Ellen married Urban Van Stewart m Salt Lake City, when she was seventeen years old, on July 17, 1865.
She was his fourth wife.
Ellen and Mary Ann, another wife used to dress alike and sometimes people couldn’t tell them apart.

Urban married another girl, Keziah Jones a sister to Mary Ann. The three girls were great friends. He bought
three farms in Adamsville and gave one to each of the three girls.
Ellen’s baby, Lydia Catherine, died suddenly. A year later, in 1880, her son Andrew got meningitis and died.
In 1889, they moved to a farm in Grover. Here she was President of the Primary and Relief Society teacher.
Little Levi died when he was eight years old. Then her husband Urban passed away on December 25, 1898.
Everyone called Ellen “Grandma Stewart.” Ellen broke her leg and after three weeks of suffering passed
away on November 15, 1932, at eighty-four years six months of age.
