Franklin J. Schaad Jr.
MILDRED — Franklin J. Schaad Jr., 76, of Jackson Street, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and a part time resident of Largo, Fla. He and his wife, the former Marcella Steafather Schaad, observed their 48th wedding anniversary June 23. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a scout in the 88th Cavalry Recon 8th Armored Division Troop B, and served in the Rhineland Ardennes Central Europe where he received the bronze star medal, European African and Middle Eastern Campaign medal with three bronze stars and the good conduct medal. He was a member of McDermott Post 452 American Legion, Mildred, the A.J. Bird Post 384, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Overton, the Eighth Armored Division Association, White Ash Land Association and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a former member of the Dushore Lions Club, the Mildred Fire Company and Ambulance Association and the Elks Lodge in Towanda. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing. Born here Dec. 18, 1923, he was a son of Franklin and Edna Thayer Schaad. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Daniel of Mildred; a daughter, Susan Soden of Columbia; a sister, Dolores Beauchamp of Adelphia, Md.; and five grandchildren, Vincent and Justin Soden and Danielle, Corey and Kyle. He was preceded in death by a brother, William. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Michael Harris officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends may call at McHenry’s, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. A Legion service will be at 7:30 and a vigil will follow at 8:30. A prayer service will be at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
